Does Yard Maintenance Matter ... Yes it Does

What you can do to prepare your yard for spring/summer

There are several ways to take advantage of these few warm days to prepare your yard and garden for a successful growing season while preparing for the Settlers Park/Grove HOA (SPHOA) Yard of the Month (YotM) 2024 season (April -September). Gardening experts shared that this is the best time to clean up and prune old growth from the previous year. Raking up leaves and composting dead growth is best used to add nutrients to the soil in gardens. According to the weather report the last average freeze in Sugar Land and surrounding areas may or may not be until mid to late March but there are a number of plants that will do well in cold conditions. Plants like roses and some leafy greens and other colder weather vegetables and plants can thrive even this early in the season according to garden experts.

A few tips to help maintain a clean and healthy lawn

We all can agree that we all want our yard to be the talk of the neighborhood… of course, in a good way. To make sure your lawn and yard is the envy of the neighborhood here a few tips to help spruce things up a bit:

  1. Remove debris from your yard. Start by removing all visible yard debris such as small branches, twigs and leaves.

  2. Pull up unwanted weeds. Remove weeds and ensure the roots are removed as you pull the weeds. Weeds are easily removed after it rains or after the lawn is watered and the ground is moist.

  3. Water your lawn. It is better to give your lawn a good soak once each week than a quick sprinkle every day. The best time to water your lawn is in the mornings between 4 am and 10 am to get the best results.

  4. Mow your lawn. Keep in mind you should not remove more than about a third of the grass stem for best looking lawn.
